Why does my Windows Desktop have tons of useless icons and links?
The Windows Desktop is the screen you first see when you startup Windows. It's the screen that displays your wallpaper, and your "Recycle Bin". It also often shows icons for "My Computer," "My Documents," and more. Chances are there are dozens of icons on your desktop, many of which are unused and unneeded. Many can also be broken links – items that no longer lead to anything.
This can occur when you create a link to a specific file or program. Later, that file or program is removed, but the link remains. Clicking these broken links can lead to error messages. And with regular use, the icons pile up. If you are not sure which of your many desktop shortcuts are broken, select SpeedyPC's "Program Shortcuts" category, then run a scan to see a list.
